Youth Aging Out of Care Program

 

Acîmo, the Cree word for “tells a story”, is a mentorship and skills-building program for young adults transitioning out of the foster care system. Through guidance, support, and practical training, the program helps participants build a foundation for independent living, personal growth, and a bright future.

Who Can Participate

  • Young adults residing in The Pas Friendship Centre catchment area
  • Individuals exiting or who have previously been in care of Child and Family Services
  • Those ready and willing to commit to personal growth, skill development, and mentorship
  • Participants who are motivated to work toward independence and long-term success

Program Goals & Focus Areas

Participants in Acîmo / Youth Aging Out of Care will:

  • Tell their story and develop an individual plan with clear goals
  • Receive support for housing stability and safe, secure living arrangements
  • Build cultural connections and strengthen ties to Indigenous traditions
  • Access mentorship from trained youth mentors
  • Develop financial literacy, budgeting, and money management skills
  • Gain education and job readiness training, including resume building and interview preparation
  • Work toward independent living skills, including time management, cooking, and personal care

Commitment

Participants are expected to:

  • Be ready to work closely with a mentor
  • Commit to the program for at least six months
  • Engage actively in training, workshops, and goal-setting activities
