Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival

“Where the Trappers Mix” February 18–22, 2026

🌨️ What It Celebrates

The festival honors the traditional survival skills of trappers and pioneers—skills like ice fishing, bannock baking, tea boiling, muskrat skinning, and snowshoe racing. It’s a blend of cultural pride, community spirit, and thrilling competition.

🐕 World Championship Dog Race

The crown jewel of the festival! Mushers from around the globe gather to compete in this historic sled dog race, which began as The Pas Dog Derby in 1916. Today, it’s a three-day race across Halcrow Lake, testing speed, endurance, and teamwork.

🧡 Why It Matters

Held in Treaty Five Territory, the festival is a powerful reminder of Indigenous and settler histories, northern resilience, and the joy of gathering in community. It’s where tradition meets celebration—with hearty hugs, warm fires, and maybe a jig with the Fur Queens.
